Alcazar Hotel

Tlemcen, Algeria

Lalla Setti plateau, Tlemcen, Algeria

At 807 metres, above the capital of Algeria’s western highlands.

Tlemcen is a city you enter through thresholds. The portal of Sidi Boumediène, the gates of the Mechouar, the arcades of the Great Mosque: you always come in through an opening drawn for that purpose.

The hotel repeats the gesture. Its façades are pierced with ogee bays, its galleries open onto polylobed arches, and every space gives onto the next. Even the meeting rooms carry the city’s successive names: Mechouar, Altava, Pomaria, Setti.

“Alcazar” — the castle. The name also echoes Al Karaz, the cherry, Tlemcen’s emblematic fruit.

  • MansourahThe Marinid city of the early fourteenth century. Its minaret was never finished — forty metres left open to the sky, in the middle of the ramparts.
  • Sidi BoumedièneMosque, mausoleum and madrasa around the city’s patron saint. The portal is one of the finest achievements of Arab-Andalusian architecture.
  • The Great MosqueRaised in 1136 under the Almoravids, its minaret added a century later by the Zianids. Seventy-two columns in the prayer hall.
  • El MechouarThe palace and citadel of the Zianid sultans, at the heart of the city. The hotel’s ballroom carries its name.
  • Lalla SettiThe plateau itself: belvedere, olive trees, and the whole city set out below.
  • The Beni Add cavesAt Aïn Fezza, an hour’s drive away. One of the largest cave systems in North Africa.
